Ingredients

  • 4 green tomatoes sliced
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp buttermilk (can sub with regular milk)
  • 1 cup cornmeal fine ground
  • canola oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and any other seasonings.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the egg with the buttermilk.
  • Pour the cornmeal into a third bowl.
  • Coat the green tomato slices in the flour and shake off excess. Then dip them in egg mixture, and finally, coat them in cornmeal. Set your coated slices on a tray.
  • Heat about 1/2-inch of oil in your skillet over medium-high heat until the oil is about 375 F.
  • Fry as many coated slices that fit in a single layer without crowding. Fry until golden brown on one side, then fry until golden brown on the second side.
  • Transfer the slices to paper towels on a baking sheet to absorb excess oil.
  • Fry the remaining slices until done.
