This is an easy homemade guacamole recipe. Guacamole dip is perfect to pair with tortilla chips for a snack, or toast for breakfast. Avocado toast is quick to make, so it’s great for both weekdays and for a relaxing weekend breakfast.

Guacamole is a popular variety of Mexican dip that most folks enjoy. But what’s in it, beyond ripe avocado? The other key ingredients are onion, tomato, garlic, lime juice, pepper, and salt.

The best thing about guacamole is its high nutritional value, so you don’t have to feel guilty about eating it.

  • Avocados are full of healthy fat and digestive fiber.
  • Guacamole has only raw ingredients, giving you the full nutritional benefit of all its fruits and vegetables.
  • Guacamole is gluten-free and vegan, so it’s suitable for almost every diet.

How to Cut Avocados Easily

Yes, there’s an easy way to cut avocados! During my early days in the kitchen, I used to make a big mess because I was just slicing avocados in half and then scooping. But I’ve found there’s a smarter way to cut these up.

  • First, slice the fruit vertically into two halves and make the halves into vertical quarters.
  • Use your thumb to remove the large seed.
  • Then just peel off the rind! If it won’t peel off easily, use a spoon to scoop out the fruit.

That’s it! Pretty easy, right?!

How to Serve Guacamole

This spread works well with many foods.

Scoop it with tortilla chips for snacking, add it to your tacos, fajitas, and quesadillas as a filling, or serve a scoop with a grilled fish main dish. You can also serve it with our Mexican frittata or pinto bean casserole.

Or make our favorite — guacamole toast! Wheat bread or multi-grain bread works best for the toast. Top your avocado toast with a poached egg or smoked salmon (or both!) for a perfect meal. And if you like spicy, you can also drizzle it with a little hot sauce.

If it’s lunchtime, you can spread the guacamole between two pieces of toasted bread, and pop a fried egg in there too (and maybe some bacon??) for a yummy avocado sandwich.

To sum it up, you can really get creative with guacamole!

Perfecting Your Guacamole

The general rule of thumb is to make this dip with a balanced mix of flavors. Not too spicy, not too salty, and definitely not too bland.

Sometimes I’ll just taste my way through the proportions of ingredients, but here we’ve laid the measurements out for you. But definitely feel free to adjust per your taste preferences.

We use chopped cilantro leaves in this recipe, but some people don’t like cilantro. If that’s you, just leave it out. Your guac will still taste excellent.

How to Make Avocado Toast

Ingredients

  • 4 avocados (fully ripe)
  • ¼ cup red onion (chopped)
  • ½ cup tomato (de-seeded & chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Garlic (crushed)
  • 1 lime
  • ½ tsp chili powder or ¼ tsp cayenne pepper or ½ tsp red pepper flakes or ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ¼ cup cilantro leaves (chopped, optional)
  • Wheat Bread (toasted) or your favorite toasted sandwich bread

And whatever you do, don’t substitute the lime juice for lemon juice! Lemon juice does not taste the same. Adding enough lime juice is important for getting the flavor of this recipe perfect.

Choose well ripened avocado to make this guacamole dip. Follow the link for some tips on choosing your avocados.

You’ll be doing a good amount of veggie chopping, so grab one or two wooden cutting boards.

Directions:

  1. Roughly chop the avocados and collect them in a mixing bowl. Mash well using a potato masher, but don’t make it too smooth, leaving small lumps. De-seed the tomato and chop finely. Chop the red onion and cilantro leaves.
  2. Stir the onion and tomato into the smashed avocado. Add in the crushed garlic.
  3. For spice, add your choice of pepper. And a half tsp of salt. Mix in 1/2 a cup of cilantro leaves.
  4. Squeeze in the lime juice and stir everything until well combined. Take a taste, and add additional lime juice or salt per your taste preferences.
  5. Scoop a hearty amount of this avocado dip and spread on top of toasted wheat bread or your favorite sandwich bread toast.

Serve this guacamole toast for a healthy filling breakfast. This recipe will yield enough guacamole to spread over about 10 toast slices.

A Couple of Tips

Use well-ripened avocados; no one likes chunks of raw hard bits in guacamole!

Adjust the quantity of pepper per your spice preferences.
