This homemade pineapple ice cream uses only 3 ingredients and the electric ice cream maker and is an excellent summer dessert.
It is said ice cream came to America by way of France with Thomas Jefferson. According to certain sources, he served it at the White House; and by the time he left office, it was popular in the U.S.
While I can’t personally attest to the facts about Jefferson, I do know homemade ice cream is popular in the deep south. It has been a favorite of my family for as long as I can remember.
We recently tried a new flavor as an offshoot of our favorite family homemade ice creams- orange pineapple, peach, and strawberry.
The new one is simply ….pineapple! It is tropical, light, and heavenly! We have added it to our family ice cream roster as a “must“. That is why it fits the saying that goes, “A pineapple a day, keeps the worries away“. For just a little while, the trials of the day float away when you dip into a bowl of this delectable ice cream!
While you’re here, try our orange pineapple and strawberry homemade ice creams.
This is a little like pineapple sherbet…
This pineapple ice cream is more like a sherbet than the traditional homemade ice cream which requires a heating process before putting into the ice cream maker.
Our recipe only has fruit, soda, and condensed milk. It is a cold mixture that goes directly into the mixer.
Its texture will be less milk, creamy and have a lighter, airier consistency.
Our secret ingredient
The key (secret) to this amazing frozen delight is in the soda…that’s right soda!! We use pineapple soda (Fanta, Crush, or whatever brand you can find) to give the ice cream a bolder pineapple flavor.
When combined with crushed pineapple (for texture) and creamy condensed milk (for richness), it is like a cool breeze on a summer day! Exhilarating, invigorating, and revitalizing!
What you need to make our homemade pineapple ice cream
- Two 2-liter bottles of Pineapple Soda (Fanta, Crush, etc.)
- 2 cans Sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (20 oz) can crushed pineapple
- 2-3 bags of ice
- 1 Box Rock Salt
How to make it
Drain one can of pineapple thoroughly (otherwise it’ll make the ice cream runny). Mix together the first 2-liter bottle of the pineapple soda (any brand) with the sweetened condensed milk and drained crushed pineapple (any brand).
Then add about half of the second 2-liter bottle. You need around 3 liters, not 4 in total. Stir really well until blended. Put into electric ice cream freezer and prepare as directed on freezer. Churn with ice and rock salt for 30-45 minutes (or longer).
We do it outside to keep the noise down and to make cleaning up any spills easier. When ready spoon into bowls and enjoy by itself or with cake or cookies.
Notes
- You can substitute diet soda as well. It might not be as sweet but will still taste delicious.
- You can use crushed or chunk pineapple. We like the crushed. And, remember, draining the pineapple is very important.
- Use whatever brand of Soda you prefer.
