Chocolate gravy may be one of the most controversial foods of the South. It’s right up there with sweet cornbread. Folks either swear by chocolate gravy, or they think it’s crazy.

Well I say NO THANK YOU to adding sugar to cornbread, but a big YES to chocolate gravy!

Many Southerners strictly stick with the traditional sausage gravy for their biscuits. But for me, the gravy I choose depends on whether I’m in the mood for sweet or savory. If you have a sweet tooth, putting chocolate sauce on your biscuits is definitely a treat to enjoy.

Making Southern Chocolate Gravy

This gravy recipe is so easy that it’s sure to be your new favorite breakfast or dessert topper!

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

Directions

  1. Stir the cocoa powder, sugar, flour, and salt together until fully incorporated.
  2. Pour the milk into the dry ingredients and whisk until well combined.
  3. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir frequently for 7-10 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to a gravy consistency.
  4. Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the butter and vanilla extract.

    Cinnamon Rolls were left out of the list for uses of Chocolate Gravy. My MIL’s family were 100% Southern from Kentucky and Tennessee… they all loved this on homemade cinnamon rolls… and biscuits.
