Southern White Gravy
- 2 cups milk (whole milk works best)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup butter
- salt and pepper
- Place the butter in your skillet and heat at medium-high heat on your stovetop, until fully melted.
- Stir in the flour and let it break down in the butter for a couple minutes. Then slowly add in the milk, while continuing to stir. It will thicken after a few minutes.

We’re so glad you enjoyed it, Elsie!
I thought I was the only one that made my white gravy like this. I’m 58 years young & this is exactly how my mother & her mother’s recipe deep here in San Antonio. I couldn’t believe how many other recipes called for 15 + ingredients. Simple cooking, simple ingredients are always the best. I’m thrilled to finally see recipes that have been in my family for over 60 years.
Alicia, thank you for sharing that you love this simple gravy as much as we do!
I love the recipe . It follows the rule of kiss = keep it simple I’m not going to put the last word . Not trying to be offensive. My family loves this gravy. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks Linda, we always try to follow the KISS rule on this site! Glad you love the gravy. 🙂
